With the agile transformation, the concept of Scrum entered our lives. We define it as a framework, not a methodology. The great thing about defining it so is that it helps teams find what works best for them.
Scrum is like a game and has rules just like any game. Remember: you will get the maximum benefit from the game if you adapt yourself to it.
Let's elaborate a little.
According to its creators, Ken Schwaber and Jeff Sutherland, Scrum, "a framework for developing and sustaining complex product," was designed for software development teams at the outset. It then started to use by all kinds of teams, every day, and all over the world. This is because it provides flexibility for teams to adapt themselves to changing conditions as projects progress.
The Scrum theory is based on empiricism and lean thinking. Empiricism asserts that knowledge comes from experience and making decisions based on what is observed. Lean thinking also reduces waste and focuses on the essentials.
Scrum process includes 4 official ceremonies for observation and adaptation within the Sprint: Sprint Planning, Daily Scrum, Sprint Review, Sprint Retrospective. These events work because they implement "Transparency", "Inspection" and "Adaptation" as pillars of Scrum's empiricism.
Transparency
The resulting process and work must be transparent to those who do the work as well as those who benefit from the work. Key decisions are based on the perceived state of Scrum's three key artifacts. Artifacts with low transparency can lead to decisions that reduce value and increase risk.
Transparency makes inspection possible. In the absence of it, the inspection made is misleading and leads to waste.
Inspection
Scrum artifacts and progress towards agreed goals should be reviewed frequently and diligently to detect potentially unwanted deviations or issues. For observation, Scrum builds rhythm with its five recommended activities*.
Inspection also makes adaptation possible. Inspection without adaptation is considered meaningless. It is important to remember that Scrum events are designed to drive change.
Adaptation
If any aspect of a process falls outside of acceptable limits, or if the end product is unacceptable, the process applied or the product being produced should be corrected. Correction should be made as soon as possible without allowing further deviations. Adaptation becomes difficult when the people involved are not empowered or don’t achieve self-direction. A Scrum team is expected to adapt themselves as soon as it learns something new through observation.
5 Core Values of Scrum
Successful implementation of Scrum depends on the ability of team members to master the five values that I have summarized in one sentence below.
Commitment: Team members personally commit to achieving the goals of the Scrum team.
Focus: Everyone focuses on the work of the sprint and the goals of the Scrum team.
Courage: Scrum team members have the courage to do the right thing and work through tough problems.
Respect: Scrum team members respect each other to be capable, independent people.
Openness: Scrum team members and its stakeholders agree to be open about all work and the challenges of getting it done.
The creators of Scrum describe it as "simple to understand but difficult to master". So be considerate of yourself and your team as you work to implement Scrum values. Despite the challenges, you and your team will be better off every day when you apply the values of Scrum: courage, focus, commitment, respect, and openness.
