The agile working model may be creating some reservations at first glance because of the change it proposes, but these reservations should not keep you from taking the first step. Let's eliminate prejudices together.
Like every issue, there are many common prejudices about agility. Before I started this business, to be honest, I also had some. I think these prejudices are a bit of a defense system against the unknown. As I dove in and experienced it, all of my prejudices disappeared one by one. It is not tempting at all to return to working in a traditional structure right now.
I would like to share with you some of the prejudices I remember from the agile teams we work with. I believe it will be helpful when stepping into HEY!.
“Agility doesn't work for us”: No organizational structure is that special. The agile working model has worked very well in many different structures around the world. It will probably work well for you too.
“It’s a cultural thing”: Actually, not quite. It's more a matter of practice and discipline. Thinking, "This is a cultural thing, we cannot train employees" will make change impossible.
“We started working agile, but nothing much has changed in our lives”: Of course, it hasn't changed. Because you are running the first sprint. Our experience shows that after at least the 10th sprint, the teams feel some changes very clearly.
“But we are already working agile”: Really? I do not think so. Where is the customer, then? Do you measure the team speed? You should give more positive answers to many similar questions.
“Dailys are very mechanical”: Not exactly. Dailys are an opportunity to 'align' agile teams every day. If it doesn't end in 15 minutes and the webcams are not turned on during remote work, it may feel a bit mechanical. It's up to us to change that.
“Hierarchy cannot be easily abolished”: True, our main goal is not to abolish the hierarchy anyway; it is to create a mindset hierarchy-free mindset. Because new ideas sprout more easily in work environments where everyone can freely share their ideas.
There are certainly many other prejudices similar to these, but don't worry; they all have solutions and answers.
